Be Like a Pilot

What do pilots do when they first get on the plane as a passenger? – For one thing, they always look around to find the nearest emergency exit. Then count the number of seats between them and that exit. It only takes a quick glance.

In the dark, or under water, or if there is smoke, or if upside down, you know beforehand where the exit is. You can blindly count the number of seats by touch to reach that emergency exit row, because you have counted them.

It’s quick and easy to do, every time.

Failure is Not Permanent

You’ve no doubt heard about the website Alibaba, started by Jack Ma. His company attracts 100 million shoppers a day and his current net worth is around $20 billion dollars.

“I failed 3 times in college. I applied 30 times to get a job but I have always been rejected. When KFC came to China for the first time, we were 24 to apply and I was the only one to be dismissed. I wanted to go into the police and 5 postulants, I was the only one not to be accepted. I applied 10 times to return to Harvard University USA and I was rejected.” Jack Ma, Alibaba Creator & 22nd World fortune according to Forbes in 2015.

“Never give up because you failed once, know that failure is sometimes out of the way to reach your intended route”

Here is a good interview with Jack at Davos World Economic Forum Interview by Charlie Rose. Go to 8:30 for the above talk about his failures.

Do You Want Coffee or The Cup?

A Father brought two cups of coffee to his two sons, one cup was the most beautiful cup you had ever seen. It was layered with gold accents and was given to the younger son. The other was a simple paper cup.

The older son protested and asked why he was given the paper cup and not the expensive cup being that he was the eldest.

The Father said, “It is normal for you to want only the best. But that is also the source of your unhappiness.”

“What you really wanted was Coffee, NOT the cups, but you still want for the best cups even though you had asked for coffee.

Your life is like coffee and jobs, money and status in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain your life.

Don’t let the cups drive you. Because at the end of the day, all we want is to enjoy the coffee.
